Resumo: O artigo explora a contribuição do marxismo para pensar o papel político da classe trabalhadora nos conflitos contemporâneos, a partir da derrota que se sucedeu às “ondas de revoltas” dos anos 1970. Para isso, retoma a ideia marxiana de “movimento social em geral”, a partir da qual traça alguns padrões de desenvolvimento nas “ondas” de ascensão e queda que aparecem na história dos movimentos populares. Sob este prisma, investiga os protestos contemporâneos, que explodiram em diversos países a partir do fin al do século XX, contrariando as teorias que afirmam seu caráter isolado e independente.

“ The movement as a whole” : waves and crises
Abstract: The article explores the contribution of Marxism to think the political role of the wor king class in the contemporaneous conflicts, since the defeat that occurred after the “waves of re volt” of the years 1970. For this, it resumes the Marxian idea of a “general social movement”, based on wich it delineates some patterns of development in the “waves” of ascension and fall that appear in the history of the popular movements. Under this approach, it investigate s the contemporaneous protests that e rupted in several countries since the end of the 20th centu ry, contrarily to the theories that affirm their isolated and independent character.
